Most tourists make some trips in the vicinity.
One of the most attractive trip from Phuket is to Ranong and Kawthaung in south Myanmar also called the visa run but since they continuously change the visa parameter in both country it's not so easy and full of traps. At Ranong is no nightlife means a boring place no need to spend long time there.
E.g. when leaving Thailand to Kawthaung with the boat and crossing the bay it is only possible to have a look around within the city limits. If someone wants to travel further it needs a visa from the Bangkok Embassy and this is the same at every border crossing. Why is that? What they wont tell is the Bangkok Embassy / Consulate is financed only by the money they get from the visas otherwise they are gone. This people are not able to sit together and sort it out.
Now when taking the longtailboat back to Thailand / Ranong the Thai will only issue a 2 week visa at the land border and so on. Also this is changed from "time to time" it looks that they are quite chaotic, one day this and the next that. Considering what a great tourism area south Myanmar is and they are blocking to travel there because of the usual bureaucracy which has not changed since the 19th Century it's a shame. During colonial times it was more easy to travel as I know from the books of that time I read.
There is something happen at night in Kawthaung with girls since the city is more or less the capital of the very south of Myanmar, under the British this was Victoria Point.
